Silicon carbon alloy has emerged as a novel alloy in the steelmaking and foundry industries. In essence, silicon-carbon alloy is not a purpose-built metallurgical material but rather a byproduct of metallic silicon production. During steelmaking, it serves as an effective deoxidizer, while in casting, it functions as both a inoculant and a spheroidizing agent. Storage Precautions
Storage Environment Requirements
The storage environment directly impacts the quality of high-carbon silicon. First, due to its strong hygroscopicity, high-carbon silicon readily absorbs moisture from the air, leading to caking or performance degradation. Therefore, the storage environment must remain dry, with ideal relative humidity maintained below 40%. Second, elevated temperatures may accelerate oxidation, so storage temperatures should be kept between 5-30°C, avoiding high heat and direct sunlight. Additionally, storage areas must maintain adequate air circulation to prevent moisture accumulation.
Packaging Requirements
Proper packaging is also crucial for storing high-carbon silicon. To prevent moisture and impurities from the air, high-carbon silicon powder should typically be stored in sealed containers or packaging bags, such as plastic sealable bags, plastic drums with airtight lids, or metal drums. For high-carbon silicon in block or product form, plastic film wrapping or placement in sealed packaging boxes is recommended. Packaging materials must exhibit excellent chemical stability and not react with high-carbon silicon. Plastics like polyethylene or polypropylene are generally suitable choices.
Stacking Requirements
Avoid mixing. High-carbon silicon of different purities, particle sizes, or grades should be stacked separately. Use shelves or pallets for layered stacking to facilitate identification and retrieval while preventing cross-contamination or confusion between different specifications. During stacking, maintain orderly storage. Batches with the same lot number should be arranged in rows whenever possible to minimize errors during material retrieval and prevent further complications.
