What are the common impurities found in ferrosilicon?

Ferrosilicon is one of the most widely used ferroalloy products in the steelmaking and foundry industries, primarily serving as a deoxidizer, inoculant, and alloying additive. While many people focus solely on silicon content, they often overlook impurity levels. In fact, the levels of impurities such as aluminum, calcium, carbon, phosphorus, sulfur, and titanium directly determine the quality grade of ferrosilicon.

Aluminum-the most common accompanying element

Aluminum is virtually an unavoidable impurity in ferrosilicon. During the reduction of quartz and iron ore in an electric arc furnace, the aluminum oxide present in the raw materials is reduced and incorporated into the alloy. Typically, the aluminum content in 75% ferrosilicon ranges from 0.5% to 2.0%; in some specialized processes, it can be controlled to below 0.3%.

A moderate amount of aluminum enhances the deoxidizing capacity of ferrosilicon; however, when the aluminum content is too high, it reacts with nitrogen in the molten steel to form Al₂O₃ and AlN inclusions, thereby reducing the steel's fatigue strength and surface quality. For the production of aluminum-killed steel, procuring low-aluminum ferrosilicon is particularly important.

Calcium-The Key to Fluidity

Calcium primarily originates from the ash content in reducing agents and from furnace lining materials. The calcium content in ordinary ferrosilicon typically ranges from 0.2% to 0.8%. The presence of calcium significantly improves the melting characteristics of ferrosilicon-an appropriate amount of calcium lowers its melting point, allowing it to melt and disperse more quickly in molten steel. However, when the calcium content is too high, it tends to form high-melting-point calcium aluminate inclusions, which can adversely affect the purity of the molten steel.

Carbon-requires strict control

In the production of ferrosilicon, carbon primarily comes from electrodes and reducing agents. Although ferrosilicon itself has a low carbon content (typically 0.05%–0.20%), for the production of high-end grades such as low-carbon steel and electrical steel, even a 0.01% increase in carbon content can result in non-conforming products.

Sulfur and Phosphorus-Harmful Impurities

Sulfur and phosphorus are elements that must be strictly controlled in nearly all steel materials. In ferrosilicon, sulfur content is typically below 0.02%, and phosphorus below 0.05%. These elements primarily originate from ore raw materials and coke. Ferrosilicon with high sulfur and phosphorus content introduces harmful elements into the steel, leading to increased hot and cold brittleness in the steel. For manufacturers producing high-quality alloy steel and pipeline steel, it is recommended to select ferrosilicon products with low levels of both sulfur and phosphorus.

Titanium-An Often Overlooked Impurity

Titanium is a trace element in ferrosilicon, typically present at levels between 0.05% and 0.30%. Although its concentration is low, the impact of titanium should not be underestimated. During continuous casting, titanium reacts with nitrogen in the steel to form TiN inclusions, which can clog the nozzle. Controlling titanium content is critical for the production of deep-drawing steel sheets or thin sheets requiring high surface quality.

Although common impurities in ferrosilicon-such as aluminum, calcium, carbon, sulfur, phosphorus, and titanium-are present in low concentrations, they significantly impact the performance of ferrosilicon and the final quality of steel. Understanding the characteristics and effects of these impurities will help you select ferrosilicon products that are best suited for your specific processes.
