The melting point of metallic silicon is 1420°C, with a density of 2.34 grams per cubic centimeter. It is hard and brittle. At room temperature, it is insoluble in acids but readily soluble in alkaline substances. The properties of metallic silicon are similar to those of germanium, lead, and tin, exhibiting semiconductor characteristics. Silicon is extremely abundant in the Earth's crust, second only to oxygen in quantity and constituting over a quarter of the crust's total mass. It primarily exists as silicon dioxide (SiO₂) or silicates. The purest silicon mineral is quartz, also known as silica.

It is used in alloy formulation. Silicon-aluminum alloys represent the most widely used silicon alloys. Silicon-aluminum alloys serve as potent composite deoxidizers. Substituting pure aluminum with these alloys during steelmaking enhances deoxidizer utilization, purifies molten steel, and improves steel quality. Characterized by low density, minimal thermal expansion coefficient, excellent casting properties, and superior wear resistance, castings made from these alloys exhibit high impact resistance and exceptional high-pressure density. This significantly extends service life, making them ideal for aerospace vehicle.
